Preseptal and Orbital Cellulitis

Definition

  • Infection of tissues anterior to the orbital septum is described as a preseptal or periorbital infection.
    • The terms preseptal and periorbital may be used interchangeably.
  • Preseptal cellulitis, or periorbital cellulitis, is often considered as a diagnosis.
    • However, the term is an inadequate diagnostic label unless accompanied by a modifier that indicates the probable pathogenesis.
  • Orbital cellulitis is infection of the soft tissues of the orbit posterior to the orbital septum.
