Hypothyroidism

Definition

  • Clinical state in which production (or incipient failure of production) of thyroid hormones is insufficient to the extent that it leads to clinical manifestations
  • Primary hypothyroidism: insufficient thyroid hormone from failure of thyroid gland
  • Secondary hypothyroidism: insufficient production of thyrotropin from pituitary abnormalities
  • Tertiary hypothyroidism: insufficient production of thyrotropin from hypothalamic abnormalities
