Definition
- Clinical state in which production (or incipient failure of production) of thyroid hormones is insufficient to the extent that it leads to clinical manifestations
- Primary hypothyroidism: insufficient thyroid hormone from failure of thyroid gland
- Secondary hypothyroidism: insufficient production of thyrotropin from pituitary abnormalities
- Tertiary hypothyroidism: insufficient production of thyrotropin from hypothalamic abnormalities
