Henoch-Schonlein Purpura

Definition

  • Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is the most common form of vasculitis in children.
  • A small-vessel vasculitis mediated by immunoglobulin (Ig) A–containing immune complexes and characterized by nonthrombocytopenic purpura, abdominal pain, arthralgias, and renal disease
  • Diagnostic criteria published in 1990 by the American College of Rheumatology state that if ≥ 2 of the following are present, sensitivity and specificity for HSP are > 87%.
    • Palpable purpura
    • Initial presentation at ≤ 20 years
    • Bowel angina
    • Typical biopsy findings
