- Diabetes mellitus
- Heterogeneous group of conditions with diverse underlying pathophysiologic factors that result in elevated blood glucose levels
- Type 1 diabetes (T1D)
- Elevated blood glucose level caused by an absolute insulin deficiency
- Type 1A
- Classic form caused by autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic β cells
- Type 1B
- Nonimmune-mediated severe insulin deficiency caused by such conditions as cystic fibrosis or pancreatectomy
- Type 2 diabetes (T2D)
- Caused by a relative insulin deficiency, peripheral resistance to the action of insulin, or both
- Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY): defect in pancreatic β cells
