Diabetes Mellitus

Definition

  • Diabetes mellitus
    • Heterogeneous group of conditions with diverse underlying pathophysiologic factors that result in elevated blood glucose levels
  • Type 1 diabetes (T1D)
    • Elevated blood glucose level caused by an absolute insulin deficiency
    • Type 1A
      • Classic form caused by autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic β cells
    • Type 1B
      • Non–immune-mediated severe insulin deficiency caused by such conditions as cystic fibrosis or pancreatectomy
  • Type 2 diabetes (T2D)
    • Caused by a relative insulin deficiency, peripheral resistance to the action of insulin, or both
  • Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY): defect in pancreatic β cells
