Chapter 339: Anaphylaxis

Elizabeth Secord, MD; Michael R. Simon, MD
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Severe allergic reactions mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) and involving 2 or more organ systems are classically referred to as anaphylaxis. Clinically similar events that are not attributable to IgE are historically referred to as anaphylactoid. The terms are often used interchangeably because the clinical syndromes are often indistinguishable, and the treatment recommendations are the same regardless of the cause.
