The use of antimicrobial agents to treat diseases caused by bacteria is part of the day-to-day practice of pediatrics. Antimicrobial therapy continuously evolves; even experts in infectious diseases have trouble staying abreast of new agents and their pharmacologic properties and pharmacodynamics. The practitioner should know how to use a limited number of antimicrobial agents well rather than having a meager knowledge of many.
