Pediatric Care Updates
The Recommended Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedules--United States were approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. There are 3 immunization schedules: 0 to 6 years of age, 7 to 18 years of age, and a catch-up immunization schedule for those who start late or fall behind.
Child Abuse, Confidentiality, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act - This AAP policy statement provides an overview of HIPAA regulations with regard to the pediatrician's role releasing or reviewing patient health information when the patient is a child who is a suspected victim of abuse or neglect.
Children as Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors - This AAP statement includes a discussion of the ethical considerations regarding minors serving as stem cell donors using the traditional benefit/burden calculation from the perspectives of both the donor and the recipient.
Hospital Stay for Healthy Term Newborns - This revised AAP policy statement explains that the hospital stay of the mother and her healthy term newborn infant should be long enough to allow identification of early problems and to ensure that the family is able and prepared to care for the infant at home.
Injuries in Youth Soccer - Injury rates in youth soccer, known as football outside the United States, are higher than in many other contact/collision sports and have greater relative numbers in younger, preadolescent players. This revised AAP policy statement serves as a basis for encouraging safe participation in soccer for children and adolescents.
Pediatrician-Family-Patient Relationships: Managing the Boundaries - This revised AAP policy statement delineates the appropriate professional boundaries between pediatricians who provide medical care for children (including their own) and their patients and patients' family members.
Physician Refusal to Provide Information or Treatment on the Basis of Claims of Conscience - The following AAP policy statement discusses the role of conscientious objection in pediatric practice.
Screening for Obesity in Children and Adolescents: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement - The following recommendation statement discusses obesity screening for children and adolescents and recommends that clinicians screen children aged 6 years and older for obesity and offer or refer them to intensive nutrition and fitness counseling and behavioral interventions to promote improvements in weight status.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for Children and Youth With Disabilities - The purpose of this revised AAP policy statement is to provide updated information about the SSI medical and financial eligibility criteria and the disability-determination process. This statement also discusses how pediatricians can help children and youth when they apply for SSI benefits.
